Where to Smoke in the Strip

Where to Smoke in the Strip
By Chuck Shane

Now that the Pittsburgh winter approaches, and the patio and porch become more uncomfortable by the day, where does one go to enjoy a bit of relaxation with a cigar, cigarette, or pipe?

Luckily, the Strip District is home to two of the most comfortable, most hospitable venues to do just that—to smoke, and if you wish, to enjoy a drink, alcoholic or otherwise. Located literally within a few blocks of one another, each has a distinctly different ambiance, and each has become a favorite of many in the area. In fact, many smokers frequent both establishments.

Cioppino Cigar Bar
Cioppino Cigar Bar

The Cioppino Cigar Bar recalls a drawing room or library in a turn-of-the-century mansion—soft lighting, leather sofas, paneled walls. There is also a relatively large bar area, and the wall humidor houses a selection of some of the world's best cigars, among many other favorites.

If you wish, you can access the complete Cioppino Restaurant menu and have it served in the Cigar Bar, making it a comfortable venue for a business lunch or dinner. Fund-raising "smokers" hosted by local charities and other events based on the appeal of cigar smoking are part of the ongoing activities at the Cigar Bar. Steelers, Penguins, and other area sports teams regularly use the facility to raise money for their favorite
charities.

Leaf & Bean

Tropical island casual—very casual—is reflected in the décor of the Leaf & Bean. You wouldn't be surprised to see Jimmy Buffet enjoying a cigar and having a few laughs with friends. The walk-in humidor is well stocked with a variety of brands at various price levels. "As an official Rocky Patel Lounge, we have access to every Patel product as well as other top brands," says owner Jim Robinson.

If you enjoy a good cup of coffee with your cigar, freshly ground coffee is always available, as you like it—whether espresso, latte, macchiato, or plain old regular. You can also take some home, either freshly ground or beans, from the varieties available.
Cigars, coffee—how about some entertainment? Yes, every Saturday afternoon you'll find live entertainment at the Leaf & Bean. "It's something we began several years ago. It became popular with our customers, so we keep it going," says Robinson.
Leaf & Bean is located at 22nd Street and Penn Avenue; 412-434-1480; www.leafandbean.com.

Two smoker's havens in the Strip, each with much to offer!
